We have met the morons.

Not to beat a dead horse (boy, doesn’t it feel like it these days), but Dawn gives a final spin on the Tiff situation.

You and your friend seemed to have forgotten to mention that porn was made available to a child.
Do you really think a 7 year old understood the difference between hotlinking and downloading?

While I posted a reply under a different name, I’ll admit it was me:

In your haste to lay blame, you seem to have forgotten, “Lurker”, that it is the RESPONSIBILITY OF THE PARENT TO SUPERVISE a child when they are in the Internet.

You’re telling me that it’s perfectly ok for a child of 7 to be creating web pages and linking around the web?

That it’s okey for a child of 7 to be on the web unsupervised, regardless? I think not.

Put the blame where it rightfully belongs: on the parent. They failed their child by not providing adequate supervision. Nobody “forced” her to create a web page; nobody “forced” her to hotlink. Bandwidth theft is bandwidth theft, if done by a 7, 17 or 70 year old.

Are you saying that if this “child of 7″ were to go and download music via one of the P2P services out there that the Parent should not be held responsible for the actions of the minor? If you were to say “NO” to that, the RIAA would not hesitate to show you the errors of your ways.

This entire fiasco wouldn’t be an issue except for the fact that the company in question reacted in a knee-jerk reaction and an employee “over reacted due to being caught up in the emotion”. Bullcrap. What was done, was done out of spite, damn the rules.

Just becuase the world has morons doesn’t mean I have to stoop to the lowest common denominator in my life. I guess expecting others to act like they have intelligence is asking too much as well.

I’m tired of having to be the de facto parent for every child in the world. I don’t have children of my own for this very reason.

And trust me….if there were any way to insert keywords into a website code that would cause NetNanny, or any other “Protection for the Youth” to block my site “dare I force something on some young, unsuspecting child of 7”, you can best bet every one of my pages would have that code, INCLUDING THE ONES THAT ARE TOTALLY G RATED.

I don’t create my website, or my blog, or anything, for children of 7 to read. Offended? Then take an interest in what your child is doing on that computer and quit using it as a babysitter.

You bred them. Take responsibility.

Well said. I didn’t want to rehash the story — I’ve dealt with my webhost privately about my issues, and I really have no words for the ongoing seeming assault on Tiff. What I don’t understand are the comments that are appearing on all of our blogs from people who are saying that, well, we MUST think of the CHILDREN. Fuck the children.

Soccer Mom was clearly stealing the images herself and then saying, “But I have a CHILD in my house! Who saw it!” I know who she is and who her husband is and they are NOT idiots insofar as how technology operates or how to hunt down a person’s webhost. The woman had a grudge she felt like living out, and she’s probably the one leaving all the pro-family messages. It’s not a family issue. It’s HARD to get that image to appear — you have to be hellbent on hijacking a “safe” image to see the offensive one. Again, would that be done by a 7-year-old who’s just discovered how to make her Barbies dry-hump each other?

Soccer Mom may have won the battle, but the war has been waged, the blog community has spoken and, ultimately, Google’s got a longer memory than all of us. I’d buy its stock if it weren’t $400 a share!!! 😀
