Great Big Sea in Washington, DC

Posted in My Bands, Uncategorized at 7:21 pm by Think-Tink

Wow! Great Big Sea always puts on a great concert, but I don’t know if it was the people who were there, Blondie who was with me or what, but my far this is the best concert I have been to. Great Big Sea came out and started right into Captain Kidd. The first half of the show was a mix of old and new, but all mostly the traditional folk songs. They did also do songs like General Taylor. The new album “The Hard and the Easy” is songs like this. Forget Me Not was a song that really struck my heart. I am always so amazed at Great Big Sea’s talent. The band has us on our feet for several of the songs. These are always concerts where you don’t feel bad singing along to the songs, as everyone is doing it.

The second half was a more rock type show. Run, Run Runaway was preceded by a mix of 80′s songs including Sweet Dreams, Video Killed the Radio Star and such. Great Big Sea ended with my song, Ordinary Day. I just love that song. It always picks me up.

The first encore was Sea of No Cares , done in acoustic style which I really like better than the rock version and another song that I can’t remember now.

The second encore was a song I am not familiar with. It was done acapella and was about Mrs. Brown’s daughter.

Fun things that happened throughout the night:

Blondie and I were there early and got in line for merchandise. It was Sean’s brother running it. He has a real job and this was his “vacation”. He was a really nice guy. I was upset though, the shirt I bought I had to get in a 3X!! I know I am large but I am not that large!

Earlier in the day, Blondie and I think we were in the elevator of the hotel with one of the band members. We also think he recognized us from out second row seats LOL.

We met a lady form Missouri who was on vacation and built the vacation around this concert so she was visitng friends out here. Really nice, and we got along great.

The cabbie we got to take us back to the hotel was a hoot! The only other time I have had a cab ride like that was in NYC. We were white knuckled by the time we got back to the hotel.

We had to ride around the same traffic circle 3 times to find the hotel and another 2 to figure 0ut how to get to it. It seemed everywhere we turned there was construction.

If you are in downtown DC don’t count out room service. It came out as cheap as it would have been for us to go out and eat. The thing we won’t do again is get a beer in the bar there. $12 for 2 coronas!

Overall a great trip! I am sure hoping that Great Big Sea comes down this way again.

What a weekend!

I can sum up the weekend in one sentence.

I had more fun this weekend than I have had in a long time.

The concert Friday night (review to follow), was tremendous, seeing Blondie was great fun even when we were lost in the middle of DC. Yesterday, deciding to spur of the moment detour and see friends and family was great. Everyone was home and I even saw someone I wasn’t thinking I would be able to. I was also very good and gave all the rolls that my uncle wanted me to give to Dad to him. Now mind you, these are homemade, fresh every day rolls, using organic or homegrown items (they come from a Mennonite store). Yum, Yum. Today, I put to use my present from SB and PR. SB and I went to Busch Gardens for the day. They are doing this cool thing where a Va. resident can pay for a day and use the ticket all summer long. It really makes sense for them to do it that way. We rode Alpengeist and Big Bad Wolf. For me, I think roller coasters are like basketball games, I can scream and yell and I don’t get in trouble. I am going back next weekend with GH and all.

Now to relax, calm down and get back into work mode. It is a good thing we didn’t stay later at the park or else I would never be able to sleep tonight.

Great Big Sea tomorrow!

I am going to lose my 7N card though, they are playing in Williamsburg tonight, but starting so late I did not want to go. Does that make me old?

I have too much clutter!

What do you wear for maybe cool, maybe rainy but again the weather people could be wrong?

Pray for PR’s mama, she either had a stroke or heart attack last night.

I hope my apron I decorated is liked.

Oh Canada!

I volunteered last night at the Virginia International Tattoo. I enjoy doing the badge check as it isn’t very hard and you meet some interesting people. My question is though, is why do Canadians smoke more than Americans? There were some that were out smoking every chance they got.

There is an Australian band here this time too. It should be a really interesting show.

Too much of a good thing

I normally don’y talk about work, but tonight, I am going to. I did a recruiting fair tonight. The one we just did in February went quite well and had lots of attendees. I guess the people in charge decided that since that one went so well we’ll do another. Today. We were no where as busy as we were last time. This one was thrown together at the last minute and little advertising was done.

Oh well, like SB says, I can’t get that 2 hours of my life back….

What a nice weekend!

Nice before the start of a busy week. Played with Gentle Hands and the girls yesterday. Today was get organized and then go to Williamsburg to return an outfit I bought online that was not a good fit for me.

I did find a hat at LL Bean that I like but will be adding to it. Found out that my home made carmel corn can sell for a pretty good price, all of the stuff I saw today was in the $5-7 range for an 8 oz bag.

I probably won’t be posting alot this week. I am busy straight through to Sunday. Grad fairs, volunteering as I normally do for the Tattoo, and celebrating my birthday. (my birthday is a week from today, cards can be sent to think hyphen tink at cox dot net. :) )

I had a very bad shopping experience tonight

I have been looking for a digital camera for a while now. I was given one by Revog that is really nice but one day while changing the batteries, it slipped and this itty bitty piece on the door for the batteries broke. Apparently the whole camera hinges on this little door and the little piece to keep the door shut. There is no practical way to fix it. So….

I have been looking for a new camera. I found one tonight at CompUSA. Great Price range, uses real batteries instead ones that need to be recharged, etc. I had my credit card out and ready to buy it. UNTIL I had to go find someone to ask about the camera, wait for that person to get over there, listen to the other clerks that weren’t busy talk about what they wanted for dinner, watch their game of toss with the keys, and one in the 25 minutes we were there never get off the phone. OK, finally the guy gets there (this is after when I first walked there were 2 clerks there). He has to find the keys to the cabinet, then looks for the camera. They don’t have that one there, so I ask if the Newport News store has it. He looks on the computer and then says he has to call. Apparently the stores do not have direct numbers that bypass the terminal hold line. He finally gets back from that and says they don’t have it either as Managers specials are usually clearance items. Well why don’t they call them that? I ask about a rain check or the display and am told no they can’t sell that. OK, so then I ask about a camera SB is looking at, which according to the clerk is $80 more in the store than online, even though they say to call a store for availability. So…by the time SB and I walked out of there, we were both quite upset.

SB was so upset he went back in and found a manager. The manager wasnt much better at customer service than his employees. He said they would sell me the display and looked up the price of the camera SB was $40 more than online with tax. SB decided he could do better online with free shipping. I decided I didn’t want a display model because who knows what has been done to it. We walked out again and were going to meet PR at a Ross dress for less. (I love that store, I found a pair of polo canvas slide ons for $14 and a bathing suit for $10!)

SB and I had a little time to kill so with Best Buy being right beside where we were going to meet, we went in (what geek of SB’s caliber can resist the call of a Best Buy?) I ran to the bathroom, which are surprisingly clean, and SB says look at this! A camera for me that was a higher pixel, and cost less. There was a clerk right there, he had the keys, had to look one cabinet over but the camera was right there. He walked me right up to the cashier and I then waited for SB. He found a camera better than what he was looking at also at the same price as that remaining nameless place.

The upshot here? CompUSA lost $1300 worth of business tonight and more in the future. Why more in the future? SB who buy for us at CHK and I won’t be going anywhere near a CompUSA in the future.

A side note here: I saw more people with bags going into CompUSA and coming out without a bag than I did the other way around.

Friday Thoughts, errr ummm Thursday Thoughts…yeah…

I now remember why I don’t buy clothes from catalogs. No matter how good it looks like it should fit it doesnt. All I wind up doing is returning those items.

When transitions happen, everyone usually tries to make them go smoothly, where were the gas people when that lesson was being taught.

How did I get a neice that is taller than my shoulder at 10!

I can justify returning clothes as I bought shoes tonight :)

Woosh!

That is the sound of April passing me by with out me realizing it? Do you realize my birthday that is the true end of April is only a week from Sunday? Or that I go to see Great Big Sea a week from Friday (Blondie got us 2nd row seats now! know anyone who needs tickets?)?

The last full week of classes is this week. Spring Break seems like it was just yesterday. I have to really get working on Witha’s baby blanket or the baby will be 5 by the time it gets done.

I know I am getting better when chocolate ice cream stays down and i have been awake for more than 2 hours. Guess this means I don’t have an excuse not to go to work tomorrow.
